Drifting ruined my life.

Ugh, It's true. Drifting ruined my life. I'm out of cash, credit, energy and patience.

Okay, it's not really true, I am out of cash, credit, energy and patience, but Drifting did not ruin my life. The coming week will be challenging because I'm always forget a little thing I need to do to my car or getting the sequence out of order. But, when Saturday comes, I will be ready and it will be worth it.

Vegas ProAm Southwest Drift Series at Sandia Speedway

A weekend of drift car racing starts Saturday, September 5, 2015 when the Whiskey Garage Drift Series combines with the Vegas ProAm Southwest Drift Series for the fifth annual No Coast Drift Party. It's drift all day and party all night. Saturday night's party includes entertainment by Bear: The Nightmare and Vale of Miscreation from Albuquerque, NM. The No Coast Drift Party and Whiskey Garage Drift Series are organized by local professional drifter Dan Brockett. Dan has been organizing drifting events in Albuquerque for the past 5 years and provides witty and insightful commentary during the drift battles.

The No Coast Drift Party has been a fairly laid-back drifting event and party for the last 4 years. This year the Vegas ProAm brings well qualified drivers from out side of New Mexico to the Pajarito Mesa track. Local drivers are fighting feverishly against time and money to qualify for the technical standards of the Vegas ProAm. A lot of the local drivers use their cars daily.

Sandia Speedway, 100 Speedway Park Blvd SW Albuquerque, NM 87121 is located on the Pajarito Mesa, one of the most desolate places on earth. It is 28.125 Square Miles of wind blown dirt and scrubs that, until recently, was without government services. It's only 10 miles from Albuquerque, but hard to find on a map.

Driver practice starts at 8 AM Saturday. The drifting competition starts at noon. It is $200 for the weekend to drive and $15 a day to watch. For $25 spectators can get a 2 day pass that includes camping at Sandia Speedway.

No Coast Drift Party V approching fast.

No Coast Drift Party V is less than 4 weeks away and I still have so much to do on my car. The most frustrating part is my car being at the fabricators getting the pre-fab cage welded in for TWO WEEKS! First it was, “We need the car ASAP when the cage gets delivered” and now it's like they got anther job and won't get to it for two weeks. (sigh) Alignment, one quart oil separator, tuning, painting, seats, harness and tow straps all have to be done in one week.

I still have all these wires I don't know what to with.

I want to build a cowl to match the power cut off switch.

I am still perfecting the tail light intake.

Who's on first? Drifting competition explained.

A drifting competition starts with qualification. Drivers race the course solo two times to earn points for qualification. Drifters score points based on speed, line, angle and style.

Line is the path that should be driven through the course. It involves using the widest amount of track possible. The line is established by the judges before the race starts. There are areas on the line the front bumper should be close to called clipping points. There are also areas that the rear bumper should be close to called clipping zones. Between the clipping points and clipping zones are transition zones. In transition zones drivers change the direction of their drift.

Angle score is achieved by keeping the car controlled and sideways throughout the course.

Style makes Drifting the Art of motor sports. Style is connecting the points and zones with fluidity, consistent speed and using the maximum capability of the car.

Drivers score zero if they cause a crash, drive too straight, hit a cone, spin out or their wheels go off the track or their hood, trunk or doors open.

The drivers are assigned rank based on the points they earn. The drivers ranked 1 through 16 move on to race against each other in tandem rounds. The tandem rounds start with the top ranked driver racing against the lowest ranked driver. Drivers 1 and 16 run two rounds with each driver alternating as the lead or chase car.

The goal of the lead driver is to earn points by drifting the course perfectly. The chase driver is not trying to pass the lead driver. The chase driver is trying to earn points by driving the same line as the lead driver, but with more angle and style. If the tandem rounds are too close for the judges to declare a winner more “drift battles” are raced until the better drifter is chosen.

The competition continues with 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14, 4 vs 13, 5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9 until 8 drivers are left. The 8 remaining drivers compete until there are 4 and the 4 compete until there is one winner.

The next drifting competition is Whiskey Garage Drift Series Round 4, July 17th at Race Sandia.
The skid pad opens at 4pm. Drivers meeting at 6pm. Cars on the track practicing from 6:15 to 7:45. The competition starts at 8pm!

Working in a coal mine.

I took the sound damping out of my car. It is exhausting work. I wish I could have done it when it was freezing outside instead of 93 degrees. I used the dry ice method. It reminded of the time I helped dig a tank trap in the frozen ground with hand tools. Working in a Coal Mine by Devo kept playing in my head.
About three quarters of all the sound dampening.
Now I have to prep it for painting.
 "Load, I am so tired."
 It took about 12 hours.
One step closer to Formula Drift specs.
